Tour of Utah 2018, Kuss domina anche la tappa regina e ipoteca la vittoria finale

Sepp Kuss si aggiudica la quinta tappa del Tour of Utah 2018, 152.6 chilometri con partenza dal Canyons Village e arrivo in montagna sullo Snowbird Resort. La frazione regina della corsa a tappe statunitense, che vivrà il suo epilogo domani a Park City, conferma l’egemonia del portacolori della LottoNL-Jumbo, già a segno nella seconda tappa a Payson City e sempre più leader della classifica generale. Decisivo un attacco sferrato a sette chilometri dal traguardo, quando tra i fuggitivi della prima ora di gara era rimasto in avanscoperta il solo Kilian Frankiny (BMC Racing Team). Alle spalle di Kuss si piazzano Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) e Peter Stetina (Trek Segafredo), distanziati rispettivamente di 39” e 1’18”.

Dopo tre tentativi iniziali ad opera di Ruben Companioni (Holowesko Citadel), Hamish Schreurs (Israel Cycling Academy) e Cameron Mayer (Mitchelton-Scott) rintuzzati dal gruppo, una nuova fuga si compone in prossimità della primo GPM di giornata e vede la presenza di Daniel Jaramillo (UnitedHealtcare Pro Cycling), Pascal Eenkhoorn (LottoNL-Jumbo), Natan Brown (Education First-Drapac Cannondale), Griffin Easter (303 Project), Brayan Sanchez (Holowesko-Citadel) e Joseph Rosskopf (BMC Racing Team), sui quali si riportano altri 16 atleti. Il plotone decide allora di aumentare il ritmo e di tornare sui battistrada, con un nuovo tentativo che si innesca subito dopo.

Ad animarlo è nuovamente Cameron Mayer (Mitchelton-Scott), seguito da Kilian Frankiny (BMC Racing Team), Evan Huffman (Rally Cycling), Ivan Santaromita (Nippo-Vini Fantini-Europa Ovini) Kiel Reijnen e Niklas Eg (Trek Segafredo), Ruben Plaza Molina (Israel Cycling Academy), Taylor Shelden (Jelly Belly), Daniel Jaramillo e Jonny Clarke (UnitedHealtcare Pro Cycling).

Con Huffman attardato soltanto di 3’37” in classifica generale, la LottoNL-Jumbo decide di non correre rischi e aumenta il ritmo non appena la leadership di Sepp Kuss viene insidiata. Con Shelden che perde contatto lungo le rampe del Guardsmans Pass, la cui cima è posta a 40 chilometri dall’arrivo, i nove uomini procedono di comune accordo in discesa ma si presentano all’imbocco dell’ascesa finale, lunga 15,6 chilometri, con appena 1’10” da poter gestire. A rompere gli indugi è allora Franking, ma ai -7 è proprio il leader della classifica generale Sepp Kuss (LottoNL-Jumbo) ad accelerare e a raggiungerlo, portandosi in solitaria in testa alla corsa.

All’inseguimento del 23enne di Durango si porta Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy), raggiunto ai -4 da Peter Stetina (Trek Segafredo). I due non riescono però a ridurre il margine da uno scatenato Kuss, che si presenta sotto la flamme rouge dell’ultimo chilometro con un margine di 35 secondi che sa già di vittoria. Nei mille metri conclusivi l’ex Rally Cycling incrementa ancora e taglia il traguardo trionfalmente, ipotecando così il successo finale. Il suo più immediato inseguitore diventa infatti Hermans con un gap di 1’21”. Appassionante la lotta per l’ultimo gradino del podio che vede il tandem della Education First-Drapac Cannondale composto da Joe Dombrowski e Hugh Carthy e l’alfiere della Mitchelton-Scott, Jack Haig, separati da appena due secondi.
