Amets Txurruka annonce sa retraite à 34 ans

Dans une lettre postée sur les réseaux sociaux, le coureur basque Amets Txurruka, 34 ans, a annoncé la fin sa carrière comme cycliste professionnel.

Amets, professionnel depuis 2006, a roulé pour des équipes telles que Barloworld (2006), Euskaltel-Euskadi (2007-2012), Caja Rural-Seguros RGA (2013-2015) et Orica-GreenEdge (2016). Il a entre autres remporté le prix de la combativité sur le Tour de France 2007, ainsi que le général et une étape sur le Tour des Asturies 2013.

« Le cyclisme m’a donné plus que ce que je suis en mesure de donner, parmi eux un mode de vie sain, des valeurs qui me serviront pour le reste de ma vie. J’ai rencontré des gens inoubliables […] Professionnellement, j’ai eu la chance de disputer beaucoup de courses importantes« .

« Malheureusement, la compétition n’est plus possible pour moi à cause de certains problèmes physiques. Cela m’a conduit à prendre du recul et après une période de réflexion, j’annonce la fin de ma carrière et je commence une nouvelle étape dans ma vie. Je ne pourrai jamais cesser de me sentir cycliste et je vais continuer à profiter de ce sport, mais sans l’exigence de la compétition« .

« Je voudrais remercier tous ceux qui ont aidé à devenir l’athlète que je suis devenu depuis que j’ai commencé dès le plus jeune âge: mon club cycliste […] mes coéquipiers et amis [..] ma famille« .

« Pour conclure, je voudrais remercier tout particulièrement tous les fans de ce sport« .
