Abu Dhabi Tour 2018, Viviani: “I’ve always been very confident today”

Elia Viviani carries on with his ongoing moment in the sun and wins stage 2 of the Abu Dhabi Tour 2018. The Quick Step Floors rider also moved to the top of the overall classification, forcing Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) out of the lead. Viviani has already won four times this year, in Australia with Tour Down Under stage victory and in Dubai, where the Italian took two fractions and the general classification. “Usually I don’t win the first sprint of a stage race because I have to break the ice in the first fraction – debuts Viviani – I have always been very confident today and also when the crosswind was blowing I felt strong and I was willing to pull”, asked at the end of the race.

Viviani is twice as happy thanks to the GC lead obtained together with the stage victory, two achievements that the Italian had in his mind throughout the race. “I asked my teammates to wait for me and close the gap because I wanted to win the stage and I knew the GC lead was possible to get. When we reeled in the break I said to put all our efforts into the last corner”. Former Dubai Tour winner also wanted to thank his teammates one at a time: “Alvaro Hodeg is unbelievable in his preparation for my sprint, Michael Morkov is always in the right place and I trust Fabio Sabatini 100 per cent for the lead out. With such a team, it was easy for me to finish it off”, concluded Viviani.
