Volta ao Algarve 2018, Geraint Thomas takes the win in stage 3 time trial

Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) wins the Volta ao Algarve 2018 stage 3 time trial. The Welsh, who was one of the main favourites for the stage win, has covered the 20,3 kilometers of course around Lagoa in 24’09”. Second time of the day has been marked by European Champion Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal), who did only 11 seconds worse than Thomas. Stefan Kung (BMC Racing) finished in third with 19 seconds behind the leader whereas in fourth sit Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), who both has been overcame by Thomas with 22 seconds. Nothing to do for the former World Champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin), who ended the stage 27 seconds behind the winner. Today’s race has not been a good performance for BMC Racing’s leader Richie Porte, who finished far from the leading positions. In this manner Geraint Thomas stakes a claim on the overall classification, which is now led by 2018 Tour de France stage 1 winner over his teammate Michal Kwiatkowski with 22 seconds and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) with 32.
