Colombia Oro y Paz 2018, Alaphilippe wins stage 4

Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step Floors) takes out the sprint on stage 4 of Colombia Oro y Paz 2018. The French wins over Sergio Henao (Sky) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar), prevailing the competition after an intense race. Quick Step Floors wins the fourth stage in a row and keeps the overall jersey, now on Alaphilippe’s shoulders.

Today’s 149-kilometers-long Buga – Alto de Buqueron special are the first climbs of the colombian competition. The peloton leads the race for almost the whole time, with Quick Step Floors men counting off the bunch’s pace and keeping tabs on the breaks. Fernando Gaviria conquers all of the three bonus sprints by the course and gets six seconds of advantage in the general classification. With the tempo settled by Team Sky and Movistar, the peloton moves closer to the finish line and, due to the pace of che bunch, it wears thin along the way. With just over two kilometers remaining, Oscar Sevilla (Medellin-Inder) tries to open an advantage but the lead of the gruop soon reels in the Spaniard. At one kilometer to go it is time for the effort of Daniel Felipe Martínez (EF – Drapac), followed by the counter-attack of Sergio Henao, who tries to move up the sprint. The colombian is soon overtaken by Alaphilippe, who passes over Sky’s rider with just over 300 meters remaining and keeps the lead until the finish line.
