Tour of the Alps 2018, O’Connor triumphs on stage 3

Ben O’Connor (Dimension Data) gets the success on Tour of the Alps 2018 stage 3! The Australian youngster attacked with over 3 kilometers remaining and crossed solo the finish line in Merano. Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) took the sprint of the chasing group over Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain – Merida). Top three finishers have been the ones who moved the first attack of today’s racing on Passo Mendola slopes with over 53 kilometers remaining together with Manuel Senni (Bardiani – CSF) and Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain – Merida).

On Passo Palade uphill Visconti and Senni dropped the leading group and with 26 kilometers to go, at the KOM sprint of Passo Palade, the breakaway sitted 25″ ahead of Froome and Sosa group. The latter crashed on the final descent: leader Ivan Sosa jumped almost immediately on the saddle of his bike but got rolling weakly due to the bruises and the scratches suffered in the crash. With 8 kilometers to go Froome’s group chased the leaders but O’Connor, who apparently was not enough of having been in the lead for 50 kilometers, attacked and opened a handful of seconds gap that allowed the Australian to take the success.
