Giro d’Italia 2018, Dumoulin is the first pink jersey holder!

Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) wins the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia 2018. Team Sunweb leader won stage 1 time trial by getting off the ramp last wearing the World Champion jersey. In this way Giro d’Italia title holder left Italy twelve months ago dressed in pink and welcomes Israel with the maglia rosa on his shoulders. The Dutchman smashed the best time by two seconds over Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing), who clocked home in a time of 12’04 in the very first stages of today’s racing. European time trial champion Victor Campenaerts (Lotto – Soudal) stopped the clock at the same time of Dennis whereas Katusha – Alpecin duo made of José Goncalves and Alex Dowsett complete today’s top-5.

Besides stage winner Tom Dumoulin, Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) made the best performance with regards to the GC competitors. British climber finished in seventh with only 20 down on Dumoulin. Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain – Merida) and Carlos Betancur (Movistar) performed well too.  Bahrain – Merida’s leader stopped the clock 27 seconds down on the winning time whereas the Colombian clocked home one second later the Italian. Chris Froome, who crashed this morning when he was doing the stage recon, slotted into twenty-first with 37 seconds from the stage winner. Maximilian Schachmann (Quick Step Floors), who has finished in eighth, is the white jersey holder.
