Colombia Oro y Paz, Uran wins stage 5 in Salento – Quintana is the new leader

Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First – Drapac) wins stage 5 of Colombia Oro y Paz 2018. The last Tour de France runner-up takes out the sprint in the harsh finish of Salento and takes the spoils over Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Egan Bernal (Sky) and Sergio Henao (Sky). The expected colombian stars finish in the top-four position, so that today’s stage does look like a national parade. Quick Step Floors loses not only the first stage of the colombian race but also the general classification lead: in facts, Nairo Quintana is the new owner of the overall jersey.

The stage had been marked by the break made up by twelve riders. Those are Ruben Acosta (Bicicletas Strongman), Rodrigo Contreras (EPM), Walter Pedraza (GW-Shimano), Simon Pellaud (Team Illuminate), Martin Laas (Team Illuminate), Edison Munoz (Orgullo Paisa), Jonathan Clarke (UHC), Juan Osorio (Manzana-Postobon), Brayan Ramirez (Colombia), Aitor Gonzales (Euskadi-Murias), Christopher Jurado (Trevigiani-Phonix-Hemus 1896) and Weimar Roldan (Medellin-Inder), whose gap opens until two minutes. With just over 15 kilometers remaining, the group chases the break, except Contreras, whose try is put down a pair of kilometers after.

The last climb becomes the battlefield for the stage win. Nairo Quintana is the first big who attacks, followed by Daniel Martinez (Ef – Drapac) with three and half kilometers to the end. The chasers soon jump across the gap and Sergio henao leads a counter-attacks in which Uran takes part. Bernal rides across the move with pretty much ease and than tries to extend his lead. Soon Henao and Quintana reel in the youngster, followed in a second time by Uran. Henao seems to be the less brilliant in this group but, despite the Colombian Champion’s lack of energies, bernal works for him and leads the bunch to the last 300 meters. Quintana starts the sprint but Uran claims his superiority in sprinting and wins.
